Art is a wonderful way to be in flow, in the moment. However, conversely, art practice can sometimes inspire feelings of panic and inadequacy in people. Mindfulness techniques can teach us how to accept the moment, in addition to really feeling and seeing "what is". The combination of mindfulness techniques with art practice and learning, can really enhance our ability to relax and be in flow, and also to really "see" colour, perspective and form, as well being better able to "feel" paint (and other media) texture. These sessions aim to inspire confidence and enjoyment. The art exercises in each session are designed to engage participants of all levels in an aspect of art that will improve skills, whilst also allowing for free flow expression. 

 

These sessions can include the following art techniques:

 

  • Colour theory- Painting skies. How we can paint cloud and sky using four colours in combination? This is a joyful “fine day” painting exercise.

  • Colour theory- Mixing greens. A study in getting the myriad greens in nature on canvas. This is an issue that confuses many artists, and is easily resolved with the proper cool and warm paint combinations.

  • Colour theory- Paint like an Impressionist! A wonderfully exuberant lesson in painting with loose brushwork and expressive colours. Learn to see colour like an Impressionist.

  • Negative space and texture- Close-ups. Painting close-up texture and shapes found in organic material (flower-heads, shells, bark, rope etc.,), is a brilliant exercise in looking at negative space/texture itself/form. It is an interesting way to see abstraction in figuration also. And it’s lovely to do.

  • Perspective- Landscape panorama. This is an exercise in creating depth and distance, essential for dramatic scenery. We look at how to create panorama.

  • Texture- Dramatic weather. Art techniques for a stormy sea! This is a great exercise in painting with passion, and rough brushwork. This exercise also involves tools that can create textural painted surface.
